Mindset Shifts: Seeing Beauty Everywhere

Dr. Elaine, 11/06/2025

Why are some days filled with joy and happiness while others are a series of disasters?  Often the answer lies in what we choose to notice. Where the mind goes our energy flows. What we think about is what we will see, hear, and feel.

Have you ever noticed when you have bought something new i.e. a red car, that there are red cars everywhere?  Our minds are incredibly powerful.

A challenge for you: How many butterflies can you see in a single day? I tried this experiment a few years back. It was a cold winter day on the Canadian Prairies, so I didn’t expect to see many butterflies. But I saw oodles of butterflies. They were in photos, on books, in store windows, on cards, and on social media. How many will you see?

I tried the same thing with pink cars. Once again, they were everywhere. Our mind sees what it wants to see. It perceives what we are looking for – butterflies, pink cars, love, kindness, or hate and cruelty.

Universal Laws

There are 12 Universal Laws. I think they give us a powerhouse of wisdom. For the purposes of this blog, I am only touching on two of them. See them all and a bit about them at https://leadnurses.com/abundance-gratitude-and-the-12-universal-laws/

The Law of Attraction

Like attracts like.  This law suggests what you focus on is what you get.  This is the law often used in manifestation.  To obtain the things we desire in our life, we must align our vibrations with the chosen item.  Being positive, proactive, and loving attracts more of the same.

Attraction shapes what we bring into our lives. Compensation ensures that what we give out is returned to us. This return often happens unexpectedly.

Law of Compensation

Most of us have heard the saying “What goes around comes around.”  Traffic merging is often a pain. It becomes difficult when no one will let you in, even though you are up to speed. I always do my best to let others merge easily. I do this by either slowing down a wee bit or speeding up a wee bit. I also rarely have trouble merging; someone always lets me in. This is the Law of Compensation: you reap what you sow.

This law is similar to the Laws of Correspondence and Attraction.  You will receive what you put out.  You reap what you sow, be careful how you treat others and the planet.  What you seek you will find if you contribute to that goal.

To put this law into practice, ask yourself, “What is one small change I can make today?” Consider how you can bring more happiness to someone.

Focus your mind on what you want. Do you crave a good night’s sleep? Do you want less stress at work? Or perhaps, you want your partner to surprise you with a night out. What is one small action you can take to bring more love and kindness to your life?

We are surrounded by news stories of war, killing, and natural disasters. Closer to home there are family disputes, workplace challenges, or financial despair. We easily get wrapped up in all the negativity. In doing so we put ourselves in a never-ending story. Breaking free is not easy, but it can be done.

Breaking Free

Start with #self-care. Self-care is a holistic approach to supporting one’s well-being – physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Caring for oneself involves intentional actions aimed at preserving and enhancing one’s health, happiness, and fulfillment. https://leadnurses.com/the-difference-between-selfishness-and-self-care/

Many years ago, I started a new morning routine. I spent a few minutes each morning practicing the HeartMath Quick Coherence Technique (R) before leaving for work.  I wasn’t sure if it was making a difference until I skipped doing it one morning.  As the day progressed, I realized it wasn’t going quite as smoothly as usual and I was feeling tense. I took time right then and did the Quick Coherence Technique and got myself back on track. Sometimes it is by stopping something that we realize the benefit it was providing.

#Tune out or is it Tune In?  Consider turning off the news. Focus on what is happening around you and with those around you. Of course, we need to stay current with what is happening in the world and around us. However, we don’t have to allow ourselves to be bombarded by news during all our waking hours. Take time to do some focused breathing, meditation, or yoga. Alternatively, or additionally, get out in nature and breathe.  By tuning out the news we can tune into our bodies, minds, and emotions: we can get to know ourselves.

Gratitude

Gratitude has been identified as a feeling or emotion that promotes happiness. https://leadnurses.com/gratitude-happiness-and-leadership

Take a moment at the end of the day to name 2 or 3 things for which you are grateful. These don’t have to be big or difficult. Some days I am extremely grateful that the sun was shining or that my dog gave me some extra cuddles. I can also be grateful for a rainy day. It reminds me I can curl up with a book. I can relax. Remember, what you focus on is what you get. Focus on gratitude. You will get more for which you can be grateful.  Gratitude isn’t just a practice, it is an attitude or mindset. The more you acknowledge the smallest of successes in your life, the more joys you will experience. You will get abundance back.

Small changes often lead to large results. Just as the butterfly flaps its wings in Mexico and can bring rain to the UK. Our smallest choices can create waves of change. What small act will you do today to set something beautiful in motion?
